The shipping route between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea through Øresesund or the Great Belt has been the most important trade route in Northen Europe since the Middle Ages. In order to safeguard shipping, it soon became necessary to build a number of lighthouses along this route, and the history of Norwegian, Swedih and Danish lighthouses is thus closley linked.
In the summer of 2024, authors Jo van der Eynden and Per Roger Lauritzen joined the museum ship M/S "Gamle Oksøy" on a voyage through these waters, visiting lighthouse stations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. This book tells the story of the voyage, the guiding lights, and the opportunity to visit them. Several of the lighthouses will be part of the "European Route of Lighthouses".
We hope that this book will be recived as an invitation to dive deeper into the facinating maritime history of Skagerrak and Kattegat, set against the backdrop of lighthouse history, and the numerous lighthouses that welcomes you as fantastic places to visit.
